It's been a while since i've written so gimme a break if you read this.
Daniel fidgeted in his seat uncomfortably. Why did he agree to this? Why was he sitting in a movie theater with a not so attractive girl, watching a movie he couldn't understand? He thought about how he'd gotten into this mess.
"Danny, my friend daughter want show you around Korea, do you want to go?"
"I dunno, mom. Is she cute?"
"I don't know Danny, just go. It be good for you"
"Fine, does she at least speak english?"
"Her mom say she study little bit english"
Daniel sighed, "Whatever, I'll go"
"Good boy, Danny. Don't worry you will have fun!"
"I sure hope so"
The next day, Daniel woke up and got ready. He wore his best looking pair of jeans and styled his hair to perfection. He had to look good after all, just in case she was cute. Once he finished his preparations it was time to go. Daniel's mom dropped him off at the subway station where he met the girl he was going to be spending the day with. She was the plainest most unremarkable person he'd ever seen. Despite this fact, he would try to show her a good time like a proper gentleman. They walked together in silence, as the girl led the way and Daniel followed. They got onto the subway and boarded, immediately finding themselves to be in an empty car (a feat that is near impossible in South Korea). The girl broke the silence, saying something he didn't understand. He however did pick out the words "do, know, and korean" out of the statement. "Um...not really" he put up his hands, palms facing her and shook his head as well as his hands. Today was going to be a long day. The girl looked at the ground with a look of contemplation on her face. She looked up at him, "my...name....Min-suh."
Daniel pointed at his chest and said, "My name is Daniel"
"nice...meet....danyear"
"Erm..nice to meet you too Min-suh" Daniel said not quite realizing that she butchered his name.
"Danrear like moobi?"
'I have no idea what the hell she just said' Daniel thought to himself.
"Oh wait, Movie! You asked if I like movies!"
She smiled.
"Yeah I like movies! In fact, I love them"
She smiled.
"You're not understanding a single word i'm saying are you?"
She smiled.
"Danwheer want go see moobi?"
"Sure" Daniel said, after all if they watched a movie they wouldn't have to talk for a while. Min-suh took out her phone and started dialing, and then speaking in korean into the phone. Daniel sat there thinking of how this day could possibly get any worse. A bell rang and the subway stopped and the whole car became quite crowded to the point where Daniel and Min-suh were now quite close to each other. "Korea has lot peepruh" Min-Suh said.
This time it was Daniel who just smiled. About 5 stops later Min-suh tugged on Daniel's sleeve and he followed her out of the subway. In front of him was an amazing sight. It was a mall that must take up about 3 blocks of the city while being about 19 floors tall. It was a marvel of a shopping mall. He continued to follow Min-suh as she weaved through the droves of people pushing and bustling through each other. They finally got to the front of a movie theater, Min-suh bought their tickets and tugged on Daniel's sleeve again. He followed her up two flights of escalators (the second floor being nothing but a giant concession stand) and they found their theater and sat down. Which brought them to now. Daniel sat there enjoying the wondrous imagery of the movie but quite sad as he was unable to understand it. "좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈" was a new movie and a huge it in Korea. In english, it translated as "The Good, The Bad, and The Weird". Daniel had no idea if it was a remake of the Clint Eastwood film (as he'd never seen it) but the movie seemed awesome in all respects. There was one flaw though. The movie was set in Manchuria so even if there was to be bits and pieces of korean to understand, a lot of the movie switched between Chinese and Japanese with korean subtitles. Daniel looked over at Min-suh who seemed to be enjoying the film immensely.
After the movie ended, Min-suh and Daniel walked side by side through the mall. They stopped at a Starbucks where before Daniel could do anything Min-suh paid for the both of them and they sat down. They looked around awkwardly not knowing what to say. They ended up not saying anything at all, and having finished their coffee's got up and proceeded to keep looking around the mall. Daniel noticed that Min-Suh kept looking longingly at every little cafe or restaurant they passed. Daniel was starving but how could he prove himself to be a gentleman when she kept rushing to pay? He wished he knew how to tell her in korean that he'd pay...but he didn't. The two walked for another hour before finally going outside to see Daniel's and Min-suh's mom in a car to pick them up. The two mothers had big shit-eating grins on their faces. "How it go?" Daniel's mother asked.
"It went fine. But there was a huge language barrier"
"That why you should learn more korean"
"I know"
"Did you eat anything?"
"No, I didn't want her to keep paying for everything so I just kept walking every time we saw a restaurant"
Daniel's mother laughed her ass off. "You funny Danny"
Daniel's mother then continued to relay this information to both Min-suh and her mother in korean. Daniel turned bright red. "I am never going to let this happen to me again" he thought to himself. Never again would a language barrier prevent him from having a good time, or so he thought.
